Multipedal Mobility Units are a part of the Lorica Standards as pertain to design profiles for Mobility Units for Lorica-compatible vehicles. While not nearly as common in military service as Bipedal MUs, multipedal MUs remain popular in certain specialist model designs (such as the Thoth, a well-known line of hexapods) as well as in some civilian applications.

Multipedal MU designs share a close relationship with the more common Bipedal MUs, but also have a wide variety of differences, beyond simply containing a larger number of legs. These units tend to have greater mechanical simplicity in the individual legs while suffering from greater complexity in the arrangement of the central "hip" segment of their design, where they attach to the Core Module. While most units allow some degree of "boost" capability, allowing for thruster-assisted vertical movements, many do not, and even those that do are often not as capable in this regard as their Bipedal counterparts; the same is also true of tractor-dash features, which many simply do not provide at all.

Where multipedal MU designs really shine is in situations where the terrain is especially unpredictable, or when exceptional stability is required in the resulting platform. Some are even variable geometry, converting to a more stable form when not underway. Accordingly, production models using Multipedal MUs are often of the Battery Type or even Scout Type.

The standard specifies that a Bipedal Mobility Unit consists of:
* Precisely two articulated legs terminating in "feet" which are used as contact surfaces for the ground,
* which need not be humanoid, and;
* which are joined together by means of a hip unit which must be fully compatible with the Lorica Standard as an attachment point for a Core Module.

Additionally, many bipedal unit designs include armour skirting to a greater or lesser degree, protecting from attacks from the front or the rear. A common convention for bipedal legs is a system sometimes referred to as "dash", which places tractor-type conveyances in the "soles" of the feet. Through an expedient means, a pilot may engage this drive in order to traverse distances overland quickly, in a process known as "dashing" or "skating".

Bipedal legs almost always permit Boost as well, using some means of thrust-assist to provide a "jumping" capability to the machine.

Lorica are the common name for a class of (usually) military armoured vehicle, typified around standards originally developed during Project Lorica, a Special Research Force project of the Oceanic Econo-Political Union. The standard specifies a universalized cockpit design along with special "joint" interfaces, providing for a vehicle usually consisting of discreet units best described as a "torso", unitized "legs" unit, and two or more "arms". The concept was originally classified as a military secret intended to give the Terran Hegemony a manufacturing and development edge in the new doctrine of mechanized warfare, and they introduced vehicles based around the standard into their military service in 2029. However, nearly five years later, in 2043, Junichi Satoyama of Shoshin Heavy Industries, a member of the Project Clarity NGO, leaked the full standards definition as well as existing designs. This resulted in a sudden and extreme proliferation of the technology, and ultimately was considered a contributing factor to the beginning of the Third World War, ultimately leading to the formation of the Western Sphere Hegemony, a precursor to the Terran Hegemony. Throughout, the Lorica standard remained a critical military technology and though it underwent several revisions, expansions, and faction-specific modifications over the subsequent years, it has remained a mainstay military technology. Eventually, maintaining and updating the standard fell to the Solar Lorica Working Group, a Non-Governmental Organization that defines military and civilian Lorica standards, after the establishment of the organization under the Three Spheres Treaty

Lorica Standard Vehicle Design
Granted the long period of service and innovation following the introduction of the Lorica standard and the proliferation of new designs, the standard itself specifies something not unlike a standard anatomy for humanoid or semi-humanoid crew-served fighting vehicles. While the standard makes no absolute specification on size, most vehicles designed to the standard have an average height of roughly 5.5 metres; a few prototype and one-off custom designs can exceed this average by as much as 100%, though these tend to use only the human-interface portions of the standard and do not have mechanical compatibility with the remaining design.

The standard specifies three primary "classes" of vehicular module and establishes infrastructural standards for the mechanical, telemetric, and control interconnection of those modules. Originally designed to allow ease of manufacture and innovation for private companies within the Oceanic Econo-Political Union working on designs for Lorica-class vehicles, the proliferation of this standard means that in principal, you could assemble a full Lorica unit made up of the requisite modules, all sourced from different manufactures, even in different countries, and expect a minimum of hassle in the performance tuning of the resulting vehicle.

Core Unit
The Core Unit (sometimes colloquially referred to as a "torso" unit owing to the humanoid design of many Lorica units) is usually both the location of the vehicular center of mass as well as the unit which contains the most vital systems within a full Lorica vehicle. Accordingly, the standards governing the construction of Lorica Cores are the most verbose and thoroughly-documented, covering everything from the topography of available interconnection points (both for additional modules and for external systems), to life support and human interface standards.

Core units tend to be the most robust portion of the vehicle, and for good reason - loss of a core unit is so significant that it is effectively the loss of the vehicle.

Cockpit
Regulations surrounding cockpit design and layout are relatively stringent, and for both ease of training as well as general portability, cockpit design rarely deviates from the standards. Many manufacturers produce a "containerized" cockpit design that they use across their entire product line of Lorica Cores, and some national standards even make this cockpit layout entirely universal.

While the standard does allow for some limited customization by the pilot, especially in the area of input sensitivity, it explicitly forbids several other modifications. Even on civilian models, a Pilot Ejector System is a mandatory requirement. Substandard 17 specifies a connector type for pilot computer modules (storing pilot-specified configuration data including movement macros) known as S17 that enjoys ubiquitous support.

Because situational awareness data is provided via displays and augmented reality, the design preference is usually to place the actual human cockpit as close to the center of the machine as is practical for boarding and mechanical considerations, especially in military models. Some civilian models augment the displays and AR with clear or open panels and place the pilot closer to the front of the module for better visibility in the event of display system failure.

Power and Cooling Systems
By specification, the Lorica Core Unit is also the location of the second most vital Lorica resource - power. Power plant designs are less standardized than the overall Lorica standard, but by standard must produce take-off mechanical power, electrical power, and hydrolic power, at the specified interface points for additional modules. The means of doing so varies, but in general, falls into one of three varieties:
* Thermochemical Generative including internal combustion (of fossil-fuel derivatives or hydrogen), hydrogen cell, and so on.
* Electrochemical Storage powered by battery banks running off of power derived from some other source, or;
* Thermonuclear Generative, usually seen only in experimental military modules under Lorica-S (see below).

As well, Lorica Core units provide the central takeoff for various other systems such as lubrication circulation or coolant circulation.

Additional Systems
Depending on applicable standards or overall system design goals, Lorica Core modules may provide additional systems. The original version of the Lorica standard did include a life support standard suitable for handling NBC protection. The later Lorica S standard expansion added an additional standard for compliant units to have full space-handling life support systems.

In addition to the pilot computer described under cockpit, various other ECM, ECCM, sensor, and data handling packages exist. Even civilian Lorica units usually include an additional primary and secondary computer system, with the primary serving to control performance functions of the vehicle in full, and the airgapped secondary used as an infotainment system. Many military units include a tirtiary maintainance computer (which may or may not be folded into the primary computer), allowing the vehicle to be fully configured by the pilot with no additional tooling, adding to the flexibility of the craft.

Mobility Unit
The Lorica standard further specifies a class of unit called the "mobility unit", which may be the area in which the greatest taxonomic variety is seen. Colloquially known as the "legs" unit (due to the bipedal configuration having become iconic early on in the adoption of the standard), the specification grants that the mobility unit should attach to the core via a connection point known colloquially as the waist, and should be adequately controlled by the interfaces in a standard cockpit, with or without computer assistance, requiring no additional modification of the vehicle. Beyond that, however, variety is limited only by practicality and manufacturer inventiveness.

Mobility units that consume propellants must store them on board as no standard is provided for storing them in another module.

Varieties
These are the most common varieties of mobility unit in production:
* Bipedal MU - a design using two legs, possibly with additional thrusting or traction surfaces, to provide a mixture of mobility and poise not found in other leg types. By far the most common design in use.
* Multipedal MU - a design using more than two legs, usually a multiple of two (most usually, 4, occasionally, 6). Less mobile overall than bipedal designs, sacrificing thruster-based mobility or tractor agility for the ability to deploy into a more stable platform.
* Thruster Effect MU - Less agile leg design intended principally for aquatic, amphibious, or counter-minefield deployment, which relies on ground effect thrusters to lift the vehicle physically off the ground. Can "land" into an extremely stable configuration when appropriate, but also extremely power hungry, usually leading to a larger overall profile to allow for an auxillary power unit within the mobility system itself.
* Tracked or Wheeled MU - a tracked or wheeled base not unlike those used in more traditional AFVs. These are almost always the cheapest type of MU to produce and in some situations are more appropriate. Many Lorica fans would describe tracked MUs as "not real lorica", but standards purists simply site Substandard 7 which specifically includes them.
* Astronautical Skirt MU - a new module type introduced by Lorica-S (see below). This design is a specialized skirt of thrusters, propellant storage, and reaction control systems designed to facilitate Lorica use in space.

Manipulator Unit
The Lorica Standard specifies at minimum two mounting points on the core for "manipulator units". While this description was originally euphemistic, it eventually became standardized with the introduction of the arm type. In principle, there are two types of manipulator units:
* Weapon Hardmount Arms, which may or may not resemble an arm, and in original conception are simply a weapon module (perhaps even lifted directly from another kind of AFV, such as a missile pod or an auto cannon) more or less grafted onto a standard mounting. Originally preferred by early adopter pilots as "simpler", the refinement of the standard has relegated the perception of Weapon Hardmount Arms to antiquity, and they are now used only for their usually significant cost savings.
* Humanoid Arms, which more strongly resemble an arm as we're used to thinking of them (in the sense of having a manipulative hand at the end of a posable limb), were eventually added to the standard. Combined with standardization of hand designs, this rapidly became the standard thanks to its flexibility over simpler weapon types. Most common military-application Arm-type manipulator units include an integral shoulder mount-point for weapon systems. Some include other additional systems or integrate specific weapons instead of a manipulator hand. Humanoid Arm manipulator units for civilian models have a radically different hand-manipulator design meant to prevent them from using Handheld Weapons.

Semistandard Accessories
While not included in the Lorica Standard per-se, a variety of devices have sprung up through conventional use that most military-grade equipment supports. While many require specialist work for installation, some are common enough to be worth mentioning here:
* The entire class of backpack system expansions, which include everything from additional cargo modules on through electronics countermeasures or mobile repair equipment;
* Doppellorica, a customized upgrade package granting "over armour" of various capabilities to Lorica "suits".
* Lorica Transportation Vehicles

Weapon Systems
Weapons systems on board military lorica usually fall into three different classes:
* Integrated Weapons such as those on board Weapon Hardmount Arms, the well known Type 26 Autocannon on the Java Heavy Metals Type 26's mobility unit, or otherwise built into a Lorica component;
* Hardmount Weapons, a class almost entirely made up of the weapon systems designed to operate from Manipulator Unit shoulder mounts, and;
* Handheld Weapons, designed for the Humanoid Arms standard manipulator.

History
As part of their pre-War deterrence posture, the Oceanic Econo-Political Union instructed their Special Research Force to prepare a weapon system that ultimately became the earliest versions of the modern Lorica standard during Project Lorica. Over the intervening century, this standard has been updated and expanded several times into its modern version.

Project Lorica
Beginning in 2014, under direct order from then OEPU President Duncan Heeler, Special Research Force was given a black-budget project and relative carte blanche to produce a weapon system under Project Lorica. Originally intended to be a single-pattern design, early field test simulations showed enough promise that eventually it was decided to expand the project into a variety of specialized designs. In order to facilitate this, SRF director Juan Luiz Ramos made the decision to establish the earliest versions of the Lorica Standard which were used to work with Durandal Arsenal, Shoshin Heavy Industries, and Java Heavy Metals to produce components and designs for the specialist models.

The earliest completed Lorica models, patterned off the popular Julius model line by Durandal Arsenal, entered military service under the OUDF 1st Lorica Regiment on April 2, 2029.

The Satoyama Files
In September of 2034, ostensibly concerned about the ethics of a proposed new weapon system being produced by his employers, Shoshin Heavy Industries engineer Junichi Satoyama leaked the full specification including worked example firmware, software, and hardware designs for the overall Lorica standard on several internet websites. In reality, Satoyama was a member of the radical Project Clarity organization, which sought to reduce military conflict by exposing military secrets, thereby removing the "illusion" of military supremacy. The ensuing social media firestorm ensured that the files were spread faster than they can be removed, and while the documents were initially dismissed as a hoax, they were later inadvertently confirmed when the Eurasian Soviet introduced their own off-standard Lorica-pattern vehicle, the Ursa Ruska later that same year, with a KGB official confirming that earlier partial leaks of the standard were in part responsible for the rapid proliferation.

Proliferation on Earth
Proliferation of the early Lorica designs was assured, and by 2039 essentially all earth-based political factions had some version or other of a Lorica system, often more than one, in active service in their military. This remained the case throughout the entirety of the Third World War and beyond.

Lorica-S Space-Navigable Extension
From 2042, the Solar Lorica Working Group, concerned with safety and lack of ubiquity in pre-standardization attempts at equipping Lorica for use in space, introduced the Lorica-S Space-Navigable Extension, which provided new standards for Lorica design including the necessary life support, redundancy, and navigation system upgrades as well as introducing the Lorica-S Large Type, a size specification that allowed for a standard for overall-larger vehicles designed through Lorica S.

Unsurprisingly, Lorica S vehicles played a critical role in the Martian Conflict.

Lorica-N Alternative Cockpit Specification
From 2044, with the declassification of pre-unification military records by the Terran Hegemony, experiments by the Free Market Block's Defense Research Initiative into the use of neurological interface equipment with other vehicle types were adapted for use with the Lorica Standard. While the technology was ultimately banned by the Terran Hegemony, the leak of this information eventually made it necessary that the Solar Lorica Working Group release another extension to the standard to support it. Though highly illegal, Lorica-N Cockpits exist in some pirate Core Module designs and most who pay attention to such things agree that all three military research factions are likely working on even more advanced versions of the system.

The Battery Type is one of several unofficial types or classes into which Lorica models are occasionally sorted, according to their capabilities and battlefield role, similar to the related term Assault Type. The type was postulated by the pilot of Lorica Prima X-03 Hive, Nassaar bin Abdur Raheem, and the overall premise picked up and specialized on by a number of companies specializing in the design and manufacture of such vehicles.

Thought of as the "self-propelled artillery to the Assault Type's tank", Battery Type Lorica require specialist training to operate and are almost always equipped exclusively with Rocket Launchers, Missile Packs, or other specialist hardpoint weapons. Such vehicles have remarkable output-to-weight ratios in part because of this specialty, and tend to lack in excess output, and even have unreliably thin armour, once fully equipped, as well as having low mobility.

There are two major doctrines of Battery Type:
* Salvo Battery Type, equipping an indirect firing hardpoint weapon on either hardpoint and, often, carrying extra ammunition as well in a cargo backpack unit. A salvo battery unit stays as near the rear as possible and should be supported by other armour, with its principle contribution to combat being its ability to provide a large volume of indirect fire.
* Auxiliary Battery Type, wherein (if needed) one of the hardmount weapons is sacrificed in order to provide the excess capacity needed to mount a shield or weapon in the opposite "hand" manipulator. Proposed and used to allow some additional support in small teams, the doctrine is rarely used by national militaries and more commonly seen in pirate crews or when fighting non-parity forces. In fact, in many cases this role isn't even satisfied by using a model normally thought of as "battery type" owing to the desirability of additional armour for such a craft.

Lorica are the common name for a class of (usually) military armoured vehicle, typified around standards originally developed during Project Lorica, a Special Research Forces project of the Oceanic Econo-Political Union.

* Electrochemical Storage powered by battery banks running off of power derived from some other source, or;
* Thermonuclear Generative, usually seen only in experimental military modules under Lorica-S (see below).

* The entire class of backpack system expansions, which include everything from additional cargo modules on through electronics countermeasures or mobile repair equipment;
* Doppellorica, a customized upgrade package granting "over armour" of various capabilities to Lorica "suits".
* Lorica Transportation Vehicles

Weapon Systems
Weapons systems on board military lorica usually fall into three different classes:
* Integrated Weapons such as those on board Weapon Hardmount Arms, the well known Type 26 Autocannon on the Java Heavy Metals Type 26's mobility unit, or otherwise built into a Lorica component;
* Hardmount Weapons, a class almost entirely made up of the weapon systems designed to operate from Manipulator Unit shoulder mounts, and;
* Handheld Weapons, designed for the Humanoid Arms standard manipulator.

Instead, the Type 26 was a bipedal (reverse-knee) walker with two "sponson" Autocannon turrets mounted at the shoulder, and a relatively small cockpit within the core module. While this made it easy to field a large number of Type 26s, and the unit was nonetheless suited to its intended roles of infantry support and acting as light armour, it was none-the-less anemic compared to even the closest comparable OEPU model, the Durandal Arms Diego. In the context of Lorica equipment, a shield is a piece of equipable additional armour, usually mounted to either a handheld item hardpoint, specialty additional handpoints on the "wrist" of the manipulator unit of the vehicle in question, or, rarely, over a shoulder hardpoint in similar fashion.

When combined with the appropriate piloting technique and vehicle coroutines, such a shield can be used in like fashion to its infantry namesake, as additional armour used under direction against incoming attacks. While shields usually contain thicker armour (and sometimes additional advantages such as reactive cladding or design advantages) than baseline Lorica armour, this still results in the arm to which the shield is attached taking the brunt of the incoming attack.

The Interceptor Type is one of the several types of the unofficial "type convention", a paradigm used for grouping various models of Lorica into different classes based on their primary battlefield roles. In that sense, the interceptor is best described by comparison to the Assault Type. While an Assault type makes for a fairly general-purpose fighting vehicle, the Interceptor Type is best thought of as having the following characteristics:
* Design and usage focus on the destruction of other Lorica vehicles, possibly to the detriment of the ability to engage other targets, and/or;
* A design focused on preventing attacks on allied units by other Lorica vehicles.

This latter "interception" behaviour is what gave the class its name. The archetypical unit of the class was Lorica Prima X-04 Defender, which prototyped many of the concepts used in the Lorica class. In general, interceptors had a better output-to-weight ratio than most other classes (second only to the Battery Class) and either high speed or were highly armoured, sometimes both.

Much like its close-cousin Assault Type, the interceptor class can further be subdivided into two types:
* The Calvalry Type, utilizing high speeds to get into and out of combat quickly (a good example of this archetype is the Shoshin Heavy Industries Lupus, which was often deployed on the flanks of other Lorica units and used sweeping attacks against the enemy in order to protect them), or;
* The Bulwark Type, such as the Arsenal Magnifique Frisson, which could be configured to this role. Bulwark Type tactics were usually to deploy among more vulnerable Lorica units and provide shield defense as well as counterfire against attacking units.

Some famous aces of the Interceptor Type over the years were:
* Teophania Mors, a pilot in the USWE Army of the Republic. She piloted a Frisson Ace Type throughout the Third World War known for exemplifying the attitudes and tactics of the Bulwark Type style. Teophania was regarded a hero of the Third World War and served in the Arbitration Joint Fleet as a combat instructor for Interceptor Type pilots.
* Kenichi Yokota, a member of the OEPU Combat Experiments Team. He is best known for being the pilot of the Lorica Prima X-04 Defender and having more or less devised the Cavalry Type. He was killed as a mutineer during the Sack of Beijing toward the close of the Third World War.

Lupus was the first-to-market product offering of Shoshin Heavy Industries in terms of commerically-produced Lorica models, and the first design introduced by any on the Project Lorica design participants that wasn't based on any of their engineering proposals for Lorica Prima. Shoshin, out of OEPU Japan, earned its reputation for superlative and innovative Lorica design almost entirely off the back of the combat record and capabilities of the early Lupus models, which were considered sufficiently iconic as to be something of a trademark of the company.

Model Descriptions
If the Durandal Arsenal Julius can be considered iconic as an overal Lorica design, the Lupus might be considered the archetypical Interceptor Type, and is certainly among the most recognizable varieties made by Shoshin Industries. Right from its introduction, it was actually sent out as two distinct models - the '37 G and the '37 M, both described below.

Lupus designs have historically been slender, light, and a bit on the short side as far as Lorica go. Unusually for an interceptor, they were designed for mobility over immediate survivability, occupying a subclass of the interceptor type that some call the "Hunter Killer Type". All designs in the Lupus family featured a distinctive flared and elongated "head" unit on the Core Module and a nearly digitigrade walking configuration, with iconic "stability" stakes that were articulated to assist with traction on odd surfaces.

Because of the focus on mobility and weight savings, Shoshin had the foresight to also produce an extensive series of documentation on the use of, and make engineering provisions for, Doppellorica with the Lupus, making it one of, if not the, first production model on earth to use this up-armoring concept. Adoption of Doppollorica was mixed, chiefly seen among Lupus units in the hands of Ace pilots; for Ace interceptor pilots, it was considered the ideal Ace Type.

Lupus M.Y. 2037 G
The Lupus Model Year 2037 "General" could be considered the base model of the more iconic and specialized '37 M, but it was by no means considered an entry level or basic model of Lorica overall, requiring just as much maintainance and upkeep as well as the same manufacturing lead times as the comparable Durandal Arsenal Julius. Taking engineering inspiration from un-leaked portions of the Senshi Subarashi design process, and conceptual inspiration from the Lorica Prima X-04 Defender, the G-Type was actually an attempt to generalize the increasingly specialized main design, being the M-type.

To that end, the shared mechanical designs of the core unit and bipedal mobility unit were retained, but the 37 G used its own specific design of mobility units which featured the increasingly-standard "handheld"-type manipulators to use standardized weapons of that class, and flat-topped shoulder armour to facilitate shoulder mountpoints.

Provided up-armouring this would make the Lupus perfectly adequate in both the Assault and Interceptor Roles, and this set of parts was sold with the following firmware coroutines to facilitate that.
* Core Unit: Counterbattery Fire
* Manipulator Units: Suppression
* Mobility Unit: Greater Evasion

Lupus M.Y. 2038 M
The Lupus Model Year 2037 "Melee" was principly distinguished by its dedicated arms design by comparison to the G-Type, of which it was otherwise a twin by most reasonable metrics. The Melee variation used purpose-designed manipulator units which had rounded shoulder armour and no manipulator hardpoints. Instead, the Lupus '37 M MUs had a broader "wrist" area that could be used in like fashion to a shield and extensible, somewhat-articulated claws used in an exclusively melee role. This design was iconic, and offered a degree of maintainance simplicity over the G-type, but required specialist operator training to use effectively.

That said, many G-type pilots became Aces in their own right and the model itself remained popular. Naturally, thanks to the Lorica standard, it was not uncommong for G-Type and M-Type arms to be swapped out for Lupus pilots depending on the demands of the day.

The G-Type models shipped with a different set of firmware combat coroutines preloaded to those on the M-type as well:
* Core Unit: Body Block
* Manipulator Units: Rending
* Mobility Unit: Nimble Charge

In 2034, motivated by his sense of justice, disgruntled by his employers at SHI, and with both the help of and compensation from Project Clarity operatives, Satoyama leaked over 2 TB of design documents, standards documents, company records, and software pertaining to Subarashi and the entirety of Project Lorica.

These Leaks, best known as the Satoyama Leaks, resulted in the public disclosure of Project Lorica and were broadly considered to run counter to his stated intention of acting as a deterrent to the outbreak of war by instead accelerating the onset of the Third World War by increasing military tensions between the OEPU and the Eurasian Soviet. Junichi, a citizen of OEPU Japan, was tried under OEPU espionage law rather than Japanese law and sentenced to fifteen years in prison at a facility in OEPU Australia. He died of suicide in his confinement, three days after Operation Suihou Fengbaou, which he had actually been a witness to.

Diego is a product family of Lorica produced by Durandal Arsenal out of OEPU Australia, as a direct inheritor to design concepts of the Lorica Prima design candidates they had proposed. Initially concieved of as a dedicated Assault Type, with a more maintainable and manufacturable design than its precursor model, the Julius, which had been introduced first. Thanks in part to the AATO victory in the war, the Diego model became wildly successful and was considered instrumental in that victory, and is considered to be a successor to both the Julius (with which it shares the distinction of ongoing production) and the Dingo (which it ultimately replaced).

Model Descriptions
The Diego's design and manufacturing successes gave it quite a bit of popularity with OUDF operators and those who were allied with them, and its relatively fixed geometry and single-purpose design orientation made it an easy decision to continue production of new models in the product line even after the termination of the Third World War]. The flood of surplussed, disarmed Diegos into the civilian market after the war has also made them iconic rough-terrain industrial machinery, commonly seen assisting in construction and infrastructure tasks owing to the appropriateness of their fine manipulators.

Stylistically, they have been described as being "stripped down" Julius models, without the armour skirting around the waist of the mobility unit which is so iconic of that class, and with bulkier "waists" to compensate.

Diego Type 31C
Though ultimately unsuccessful in being accepted for the Lorica Prima project, the two most well-known Durandal Arsenal products in the lead-up to the Third World War (Diego and Julius), share a common ancestor - the Durandal Arsenal Dingo. Originally proposed as simply a revision of the Dingo design, the design that would become the Type 31C Diego and enter into service with the OUDF was actually a dramatic improvement. It did away with much of the non-core Dingo design concepts, using a completely redesigned bipedal mobility unit, and a simplified version of the Julius's famous manipulator design, which was also the design used in the Lorica Prima.

While this simpler manipulator design gave those same manipulators a wartime reputation for fussiness, the fact remained that production times for the Diego Type 31C were sometimes as little as one-third those of the comparable Julius Type 28s. The 31C was also adopted by the OUDF five years later, meaning that off-the-shelf Type 31Cs often had better electronics packages than the aging 28s, some of which were over a decade old by the time the Third World War broke out.

That said, this same cookie-cutter approach made the Diego an extremely unpopular Ace Type, and it was deployed almost exclusively in Assault Type Roles, intended for interoperation with other allied-nation designs like the Shoshin Heavy Industries Lupus interceptors. Like most other Lorica of the day, Diego Type 31C shipped with some inbuilt coroutines that could be triggered in addition to those set up in the pilot's personal computer:
* Core Unit: Minor Firecon
* Manipulator Units: Minor Hail
* Mobility Unit: Run and Gun

Model Descriptions
With a reputation for reasonable reliability given its mechanical complexity and excellent pilot survivability, the Julius's wartime exploits in the leadup to, and throughout, the Third World War made the model a commercial success for the company that produced it, and Durandal Arsenal continued making improvements and iterations on the Julius over the years, while maintaining roughly the same sillouhette throughout. Indeed, the Julius figure, with its distinctive shoulder armour configuration and rearward armour skirt, is considered one of the most iconic designs of Lorica fighting vehicles, making it a popular model to represent in merchandise and artwork. Many consider this bipedal suit design with its slightly asymmetrical "head" unit to be the standard to which all other Lorica are compared, aesthetically.

Julius Type 28
The Julius Type 28 (named for its year of introduction, 2028) was an early Lorica suit design, but nonetheless highly effective, featuring the slender waist and heavy self-modification abilities that it would later become famous for - both features making the machines somewhat more of a bear to maintain, and considerably more involved to manufacture than the next comparable model from Durandal, Diego. Nevertheless, these same features were in large part responsible for the extreme survivability of the design and its appropriateness as an Ace Type. While serving with distinction during the Third World War, the Julius is much more ironically used in the North African Wars, at which time it was the only Lorica model in use by the OUDF 1st Lorica Regiment when the OUDF was sent to reinforce their allies, the African Confederation.

By the time of the height of World War III, the Juliuses of the day were considered to be a priviledge to operate, holding their own against more modern models in spite of being over a decade old in the most extreme cases, both due to their relegation to Ace Type and their reputation for extremely efficient and well designed crew escape systems, in emergencies. In addition to specialist abilities fed in from the pilot's own computer, Durandal included specialty subroutines in the Julius that many pilots used to great effect.
Originally entered into by the former AATO powers, the agreement eventually expanded to include all inhabited areas on earth.

The agreement included provisions that established both the government and constitutional body of law for the Western Sphere Hegemony (and its later successor, the Terran Sphere Hegemony), and the body of laws governing the formation of the Arbitration Joint Fleet. In spite of the name of the supranational organization it created, the authority of the parliament created by the Baghdad agreement was originally quite limited, concerning itself only with mitigating international conflicts between member nations and providing a framework by which the member nations could resolve disputes with non-member nations collectively. Successive agreements would ultimately expand this authority to include the enforcement of laws concerning Human Rights, permitting the Western Sphere Hegemony to provide a unified standard of living for all citizens.

Originally a producer of heavy machinery and industrial robotics, during Project Lorica, Shoshin became involved in the manifacture of Lorica-pattern armoured fighting vehicles, a product line for which they are currently the most well-known. Of special note, they were directly involved in the Lorica Prima design competition, and ultimately won out as the producers of the core modules for Lorica Prima. On their own, they are most famous for the iconic direct successor to the Lorica Prima design, Heitei, as well as other Lorica models, of which they are a major manufacturer, supplying the army of the OPEU during the Third World War and later becoming an official supplier to the Arbitration Joint Fleet, particularly through their Hoshinosenshi product line.

Somewhat less gloriously, Shoshin Heavy Industries has also been tainted by association with the public disclosure of the Lorica Project files by Project Clarity, which was achieved through one of their employees, Junichi Satoyama.

The 2021 Black Desert Conflict, sometimes called the Black Sands Conflict, was a three-day period of armed conflict between September 17 and September 20, 2021, in the Black Desert and Dnieper Hot Zone between OEPU-backed Serif Specialty Robotics and Eurasian Soviet-backed Zaftra Free Enterprise, noted by most to be the birth of the age of piloted robotics in warfare.

The conflict was ostensibly over control of the Pripyat Exclusion Zone. It began with Zaftra Free Enterprise firing live rounds on unpiloted machines in the region, and the armed response of Serif Specialty Robotics. The fighting concluded when the Special Research Force, the OEPU organization behind the Combat Experiments Team and their Serif front organization, ordered the Prima Lorica vehicles involved in the conflict withdrawn.

While the battles themselves were ultimately of no historical relevance, the data assembled revealed hints of the Ursa Ruska program to the OEPU and the lessons learned formed the basis of the Lorica Standard, creating the general doctrine of robotic warfare used in the Third World War two decades later.

Timeline of Events
As the Black Desert Conflict was very debatably not a war, its timeline in history is actually relatively clear cut, and the matter was largely resolved over the weekend of September 17th through 20th of that year, with relatively little lasting impact; largely due to the pseudo-extraterratorial nature of the Black Desert and the fact that neither nation wanted to admit to a pressing national interest in the private military contractors which fought the conflict.

September 17, 2021
The conflict can largely be considered to have begun on September 17, 2021.

Polissya Hotel Incident
In the early hours of the morning, the Polissya Hotel in Pripyat, former Ukraine SSR, came under fire by Zaftra Free Enterprise drone operators who were piloting Miniursa RFVs, under development by ZFE, using the pretext of having sighted unauthorized demolitions vehicles in and around the hotel, and claiming authority as contractors to the Eurasian Soviet. In reality, the hotel was the base camp for salvage and operations teams from Serif Speciality Robotics who were involved in Project Lorica and the testing and development of the Lorica Prima fighting vehicles. At the time, only one of the Lorica Prima was available to response - the X-01 Trooper, piloted by former JSDF Lieutenant Umeko Takada. The end result of the battle over the hotel was the complete loss of the Miniursa contingent.

Western Shore Incident
In the late afternoon/early evening of the same day, Takada and X-02 Scout pilot Jesse Matthews were conducting reconnaisance operations in their vehicles of the area around the now-dry lakebed of the Cooling Pond, when they caught a glimpse of Miniursa fighting vehicles escorting a column of trucks across the lakebed. Fearing a second attack, they engaged the Zaftra contingent in combat, resulting in the destruction of the column and heavy damage to X-01 Trooper, which took it out of action for most of the following day.

September 18, 2021
Ghost Forest Incident
In the midday of the 18th, on the second day of the conflict, X-02 Scout and X-03 Hive (piloted by Nassaar bin Abdur Raheem) sortied to the Ghost Forest in an attempt to complete scheduled testing of the X-03's namesake "Hive" drone system. While testing initially looked promising, they came under the attention of a Zerif squad that was testing a prototype of Ursa Ruska, and both X-03 and X-02 were damaged in the resulting fighting, surviving only with the timely intervention of Kenichi Yokota in the X-04 Defender.

Assault on Duga-1
Almost immediately following the Ghost Forest incident, OEPU intelligence assets impressed upon the Serif test cadre the importance of "dealing with" the possibility of an additional attack, and supplied them with information pertaining to Zaftra's apparent supply and operations base - the ruins of the Duga-1 military complex near Pripyat. After a hasty conference, the four Lorica Prima test pilots agreed to a pre-emptive strike against the facility, in part to buy the rest of the Serif team time to make their exit from the region. While they were ultimately unable to take the base, they inflicted mass casualties and confirmed the existence of a second Ursa Ruska unit, before being driven off by UAV air support.

September 19, 2021
Battle of the Amusement Park
Fleeing overland and through the night, the retreating Lorica Prima test pilots detoured through the amusement park ruins in the city of Pripyat, in order to provide close support to a Serif convoy that had come under UAV fire. They were largely successful in driving back the Zaftra force, allowing the escape of the Serif column, but this left them exposed and without a means to leave the city under their own power.

Battle for the Yanov Railway Station
They then proceeded to Yanov Railway Station, which they had to first take, then defend, against Zaftra forces, including both RFVs and additional Ursa Ruska forces. They held the station against this assault for nearly five hours before the arrival of a remotely-operated cargo train, which they were able to use to escape along with their vehicles.

September 20, 2021
By September 20th, armed conflict between the two private companies had ceased, and diplomatic backchannels began to take effect between the Eurasian Soviet and OEPU. The end result of the conflict saw both countries heavily penalize the private entities that they had used as proxies in the conflict, though this was of course largely only a matter of public saving of face. The Serif Speciality Robotics staff and operations largely got folded into the Combat Experiments Team, and almost all of Zaftra Free Enterprise were already black-budget Red Army Assets to begin with.

The mediation of the conflict did see the formal establishment of the Black Desert Exclusion Zone, and formally demilitarized the area until it was again invaded in the early phases of the Third World War, 15 years later.

While not nominally a combat unit, the outbreak of the Third World War saw the CET repurposed as an elite and fielded unit, whose heavy participation in the entire eastern theatre of the war is often memorialized.

The CET was disbanded following the war when the OPEU ratified the Baghdad Agreement in 2050, which lead to a dramatic decrease in funding for the OUDF and the SRF. Its best successor organization was probably the Arbitration Joint Fleet Development and Test Group, and the various research and development organizations attached to the private companies that designed and produced Lorica vehicles.

After the Fall of the Martian Soviet, the Arbitration Joint Fleet was suddenly scaled back dramatically in its scope, both in terms of personnel and funding. Project Opus was a wartime research project undertaken by the Free Market Block's Defense Research Initiative. The project's focus was the creation of a standard for wetware interfaces between Lorica combat vehicles and their human pilots, which ultimately became the Lorica-N Cockpit Standard. The project was kept secret during the war and only disclosed during the post-war Cairo Trials, and the revelation caused a great deal of controversy.

While there was nothing inherently unethical about the project goals, the manner in which it was conducted was extremely unethical, with DRI scientists performing experimentation under coersion on both able-bodied and injured military personnel, as well as Prisoners of War and incarcerated citizens of the FMB. The most famous and perhaps egregious violations of the entire project was the creation of what has become known as the Ghost Company, a contingent of Project Opus "graduates" who were so heavily integrated into their Lorica as to be unable to to be physically removed from the vehicles.

The revelation of Project Opus and the resulting trail were the precipitating factors for the FMB's loss of political cachet prior to joining the Western Sphere Hegemony and even which followed the supranation after the fact, as they were seen as not meaningfully different from the Eurasian Soviet powers they helped defeat. His conviction in the Cairo Trials for having lead the project was also the cause of the suicide of Jessop Vale, who was at the time the DRI director.

It was, in fact, founded at the former Eurasian Soviet Colony Gagarin (later known as Gagarin City) in 2050, and wouldn't even begin settlement of mars until the late 2070s. In its pre-martian period, the Soviet was highly reliant on still-friendly nations in the Assembly of Independent Eurasian States; however, by the 22nd Century the Martian Soviet was in fact fully self-reliant owing to the industrialization of Mars.

This independence, and a resurgence in hostile attitudes between the ideological extremist elements in both the Martian Soviet and the Terran Hegemony, eventually lead to the Martian Conflict, which is considered by Historians to be the first major war (in historical terms) after the Third World War.
